Are You Too Sleepy to Pray?

Are You Too Sleepy to Watch and Pray?

I am thoroughly convinced that a great spiritual awakening will come to this benighted world if the people of God will deny themselves of sleep and seek God in the peaceful hours of the morning. It is my firm conviction that the Asbury revival set the pattern to be followed in order to have a great revival in this day and age of the world. But, Is it possible that we are too indolent and indifferent to pray? Is there no passion for souls? Is there no sincere concern for the lost? Can it be that we are too sleepy to watch with Christ in the Gethsemane of prevailing prayer? Are our physical comforts more important than or praying for others?

We are woefully wanting in natural ability to help others spiritually; we have nothing to set before them (Gala. 5:17). Unless we avail ourselves of the abundant resources of Christ through Holy Spirit empowered prayer, we will never have anything of spiritual worth to set before a starving world.

Provoking Thoughts on Prayer

If we are to have fellowship with Jesus Christ in His present work, we must spend much time in prayer; we must give ourselves to earnest, constant, persistent, sleepless, overcoming prayer. I know of nothing that has so impressed me with a sense of the importance of praying at all seasons, being much and constantly in prayer, as the thought that that is the principal occupation at present of my risen Lord. I want to have fellowship with Him, and to that end I have asked the Father that whatever else He may make me, to make me at all events an intercessor, to make me a man who knows how to pray, and who spends much time in prayer.

Provoking Thoughts on Prayer

This is Intercession

When we pray for others the Spirit of God works in the unconscious domain of their being that we know nothing about, and the one we are praying for knows nothing about, but after the passing of time the conscious life of the one prayed for begins to show sigs of unrest and disquiet. We may have spoken until we are worn out, but have never come anywhere near, and we have given up in despair. But if we have been praying, we find on meeting them one day that there is the beginning of a softening in an inquiry and a desire to know something.

It is that kind of intercession that does the most damage to Satan’s kingdom. It is so slight, so feeble in its initial stages that if reason is not wedded to the light of the Holy Spirit, we will never obey it, and yet it is that kind of intercession that the New Testament places most emphasis on.

On Every Page of the Bible

Christianity without the power of God is no Christianity at all!! Power is a fundamental part of God’s working with humankind throughout history. On every page of the Bible, you can read about God’s miraculous power in operation, beginning with the very first verse of the Bible, when “God created the heavens and the earth.” Prayer is the central part of bringing this power in our midst.

If you are a Christian, I encourage you to examine your heart and ask God to reveal those areas of your life where you have placed limits on Him. The time is short, and God is looking for people who are serious about His kingdom. He wants people who will pray and walk in purity and to proclaim the gospel throughout the earth.

You Will Run Into Problems Almost Impossible to Handle!

Teen

Nothing is more challenging, or fulfilling than working with young people. With us, however, the challenging part was most apparent in those early months. It seemed we immediately locked horns with typical teen rebellion and disrespect. I soon became confused and even wondered if perhaps that college administrator had been right in telling us not to leave school. It was a crucial crossroads. The advice a pastor would give me would set the tone for my entire ministry.

“It’s not easy to work with young people,” he cautioned. “You’ll run into problems of rebellion almost impossible to handle,” he added.

Then came the advice… “Prayer is the answer Dick. If you get young people to pray on their knees, your problems will disappear.”

I started immediately to develop a prayer emphasis among our teens. They became the “prayingest” young people I knew. And the pastor was right. Prayer made all the difference in the world.

Report by Ms. Baxter on the Wales Revival

Irish

There was no opening of the meeting; the hearts were full, and burst with prayer and praise to God felt to be in our midst. One gentleman who had come from Oxford to see the work said, “These men are not praying to be heard of man; it doesn’t matter to them what others think”. At times a wave of power, without any human instrumentality, or anything external to cause it, would sweep over the mass of people, and spontaneously almost the whole company would pray aloud, no one heeding the other, and without the slightest confusion.

There was a prayer made for a man in the gallery: it was quiet—knowing nothing of the prayer, he got up and was saved. When God the Holy Spirit can find yielded, obedient hearts to occupy, and tongues through which to speak, sin will flee before the presence of God in His people. What is the secret to this movement? On man’s part, believing, persevering prayer; on God’s part, the promised answer.

Start the Year With a 40 Day Fast…of Words!

File Nov 01, 2 34 28 PM

Start the New Year off right with a 40-day fast, a fast of words that is. Fast judgments, complaining, sarcasm/criticism, negative words, and gossip.

I will also have a 10 day fast of these words as a featured reading plan on YouVersion (the most poplar Bible app in the U.S.). The reading plan will start January 1. Be looking for “The 10 Day Word Fast” on YouVersion.

It has been said that if you speak three languages you are from the Far East, if you speak two languages you are from Europe, if you speak one language you are from the United States, and that it is next to impossible for a more mature person to learn a new language. But, the Lord wants us to learn a new language, and it is a language any person can learn at any age. It is the language of Heaven. It is words of compassion, kindness, and blessing.

Come take the challenge…40 days of fasting words. The Lord will use this to reach deep into your heart and do a heart change (Ez. 36:26).

Do You Have a Sentimental Interest in Prayer?

Casual

The reason many of us leave off praying and become hard towards God is because we have only a sentimental interest in prayer. It sounds right to say that we pray; we read books on prayer, which tell us that prayer is beneficial, that our minds are quieted, and our souls uplifted when we pray; but Isaiah implies that God is amazed at such thoughts.

We hurl our own petitions at God’s throne and dictate to Him as to what we wish Him to do. Are we so worshipping God that we rouse ourselves up to lay hold on Him so that we may be brought into contact with His mind about the ones for whom we pray? Are we living a holy relationship with God? Get into the real work of intercession, and remember it is a work that taxes every power; but a work which has no snare. Preaching the gospel has a snare; intercessory prayer has none.
