Provoking Thoughts on Prayer

Dare You Take The First Step?

Before Christ can lead a chosen vessel into a life of intercession, He first must deal to the bottom with all that is natural. Love of money, personal ambition, natural affection for parents and loved ones, the appetites of the body, the love of life itself, all that makes even a converted man live unto himself, for his own comfort or advantage, for his own advancement, even for his own circle of friends, as to go to the cross.

It is no theoretical death, but a real crucifixion with Christ, such as only the Holy Ghost Himself can make actual in the experience of His servant. Both as a crisis and process, Paul’s testimony must be made ours: “I have been and still am crucified with Christ.” The self must be released from itself to become the agent of the Holy Spirit.

Christianity without the power of God is no Christianity at all!! Power is a fundamental part of God’s working with humankind throughout history. On every page of the Bible, you can read about God’s miraculous power in operation, beginning with the very first verse of the Bible, when “God created the heavens and the earth.” Prayer is the central part of bringing this power in our midst.

If you are a Christian, I encourage you to examine your heart and ask God to reveal those areas of your life where you have placed limits on Him. The time is short, and God is looking for people who are serious about His kingdom. He wants people who will pray and walk in purity and to proclaim the gospel throughout the earth.

You Will Run Into Problems Almost Impossible to Handle!

Teen

Nothing is more challenging, or fulfilling than working with young people. With us, however, the challenging part was most apparent in those early months. It seemed we immediately locked horns with typical teen rebellion and disrespect. I soon became confused and even wondered if perhaps that college administrator had been right in telling us not to leave school. It was a crucial crossroads. The advice a pastor would give me would set the tone for my entire ministry.

“It’s not easy to work with young people,” he cautioned. “You’ll run into problems of rebellion almost impossible to handle,” he added.

Then came the advice… “Prayer is the answer Dick. If you get young people to pray on their knees, your problems will disappear.”

I started immediately to develop a prayer emphasis among our teens. They became the “prayingest” young people I knew. And the pastor was right. Prayer made all the difference in the world.

Report by Ms. Baxter on the Wales Revival

Irish

There was no opening of the meeting; the hearts were full, and burst with prayer and praise to God felt to be in our midst. One gentleman who had come from Oxford to see the work said, “These men are not praying to be heard of man; it doesn’t matter to them what others think”. At times a wave of power, without any human instrumentality, or anything external to cause it, would sweep over the mass of people, and spontaneously almost the whole company would pray aloud, no one heeding the other, and without the slightest confusion.

There was a prayer made for a man in the gallery: it was quiet—knowing nothing of the prayer, he got up and was saved. When God the Holy Spirit can find yielded, obedient hearts to occupy, and tongues through which to speak, sin will flee before the presence of God in His people. What is the secret to this movement? On man’s part, believing, persevering prayer; on God’s part, the promised answer.
