If we make the purposeful choice to follow the Lord in sanctification, we draw a line in the sand with the enemy and the battle begins. You see, the enemy isn’t disturbed about the nominal Christian who seldom prays and doesn’t mature into a disciple. This person is no threat to the world Satan rules. But the disciple who prays and decides to pursue the fullness of the Lord found in sanctification poses a great threat to all the enemy stands for.

I think we take this whole issue of sanctification way too flippantly. Sanctification can be a violent process. The enemy doesn’t like it, and our flesh rails against it. There is nothing pretty about dying to yourself. Through sanctification the Spirit of God is putting His finger on every aspect of our lives that is not in concert with His purposes. Sanctification is taking everything that captures our attention on this earth and putting it through a filter that only allows those things to pass through that interest God.

Every Christian is Called to the Battle

Make no mistake—every Christian is called to spiritual warfare. The enemy is seeking to destroy us (1 Peter 5:8). Our spiritual survival depends upon being able to discern the enemy; repel his attacks, temptations, and schemes; and stand against the powers of darkness. God has called every one of us into His spiritual army (2 Tim. 2:3-4).

God has not called us to just stand and defend ourselves in battle. He has called us to use the weapons of our warfare to defeat the enemy and crush him underfoot (Rom. 8:37-39, 16:20; 1 John 2:13-14). Everyday people such as you and me are called to put on the armor of light and cast aside the works of darkness (Rom. 13:12). We are called to bring God’s kingdom of heaven to earth: “Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10).

Satan dwells in the darkness. This is where he and all his demons (fallen angels) were sent to by God (Luke 10:18; 2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6; Rev. 12:4). Where is the darkness? We need to understand that any place the knowledge of God is absent is darkness, and darkness is the domain of the enemy. Where Christ is, there is light and the darkness is dispelled (John 8:12). People who do not follow Jesus walk in darkness.

Before you came to know the Lord as your Savior, you were in the kingdom of darkness. You lived in this world physically, but you lived in Satan’s territory spiritually. The moment you accepted Jesus as your Savior, you were transported into God’s kingdom. It makes no difference now where you live physically, whether or not you live under persecution, or if you are affluent or impoverished—if Christ is your Savior, you live in His kingdom (Col. 1:13, NASB).

The battle is furious in the unseen realm. This is why our weapons in spiritual warfare are not carnal or fleshly.

The enemy wars against us as we pursue God to have His kingdom established in our minds, emotions, and wills (our souls). The enemy is actively planning schemes, diversions, rear attacks, and every other evil plan to cast doubt in the minds of men and women concerning God’s Word. The enemy entices our emotions and wills to be captured by the world—“the lust of the lfesh,” “the lust of the eyes,” and “the…pride of life” (1 John 2:16). So many Christians find themselves trapped in sexual addictions, pornography, and other types of perversions and compulsive behaviors, never realizing that they are losing a spiritual battle. They try to fight the battle with worldly weapons that yield little success. They haven’t been taught to wage war in the unseen and heavenly realm.

What’ All This Spiritual Warfare Stuff?

The Word of God reveals that there is a furious spiritual battle taking place right now in the heavens and the unseen realms (Eph. 6:12). Most of us are unaware of this war. If we have an awareness of spiritual warfare from the Scriptures, we don’t really believe in it or that we have been called to participate. There is an additional rebutting that takes place with many Christians when it comes to spiritual warfare: it is a disturbing concept for us. The thought of battling demons, evil spirits, or Satan himself is overwhelming and frightening. But here is the truth of the gospel: much of the world has come under the in influence of Satan, as he rules the world. (2 Cor. 4:4)

Just because we have accepted Christ and go to church does not mean we are immune from the attacks and influence of Satan. When we choose to walk in darkness and sin and not respond to Christ, we open ourselves up to the enemy.

We are warned by Christ to be cautious and be sure we are walking in the light, not darkness. “The eye is the lamp of the body. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore lest the light which is in you is darkness” (Luke 11:34–35).

Can a Sophisticated Person Have Faith Like a Child?

The question you must ask yourself is: Do I really trust my heavenly Father the way a little child trusts?

Your prayers will reveal your belief system when it comes to trust in the Father.

You see, I really do believe my heavenly Father is loving and faithful and has my best interests at heart. I believe He hears my prayers. I believe God the Father looks at me as one of His little children. He calls me up close to Him and says, “Tell Me what is on your heart, son.” He says, “Get quiet and listen to what I say to you.”

So simple, so conversational, so unprofessional, so real. That’s the way He teaches us to pray. He desires the honest simplicity of praying like a little child, not praying to be heard by others or attempting to impress God. Now there is an outlandish thought. Can you imagine trying to impress God with your prayers? What a waste of time.

In coming to our Lord in prayer with the spirit of childlikeness, we will realize the Fatherhood of God in our lives.
